Book By Its Cover Review: "Fever Pitch"

This movie doesn't really have a chance with me, but that's not really its fault.  Immediately, it has two strikes against it in my book: 1) It's a romantic comedy, a genre I tend to be picky about and 2) It has Drew Barry more in it.  Dear Drew is really as sweet and cupid's bow lipped as can be, but she really has yet to prove herself as being more than just cute and endearing.  You say, "Look at 'Donnie Darko'". I say, that's the worst acting in the entire movie.

And while some people might say, "It's a Farrelly brothers movie" or "It's based on a Hornby book," neither much appeals to me.  It doesn't seem outrageous or silly in the Farrelly style, plus they need to redeem themselves still from "Shallow Hal," which above all proved that they need to work on making sincerity in their movies not come across as treacly. And Hornby? Am I allowed to say I've never read any of his books? Or that I didn't really think "High Fidelity" was very good? ("About a Boy," though, yes.)

One might say, Claire, you like baseball. That is true. But the Boston Red Sox have quickly risen to the top of my baseball shit list.  They won a World Series, finally, good for them.  But as a fan of a similarly long-suffering team, I don't have much interest in their amazing story anymore. They won, now they're in the Winner's Circle and I don't care for winners unless they're my team (or playing a team I hate.)  So any homages to their story, whether in article, book or film form, I will bypass.

Most of all, though, is that the film stars Jimmy Fallon. Between him and Drew Barrymore, there's just way, way too much adorableness. But mostly, Fallon to me will always be the guy from "Saturday Night Live" who slid by on his overstretched hipster charm, mostly the guy who ruined every sketch by laughing at himself.  Jimmy, you're just not that cute or hysterical. Maybe, though, Woody Allen will let you play him in his next movie and you can earn some gravitas.
