Today is the day to get a brand-new hairdo.
There are tons of ways to pick teams for the NCAA tournament, but one crucial element often gets overlooked: fashion. Here's how I think the uniforms in the Sweet Sixteen play out (thanks to ESPN.com for the photos)
Illinois vs. Wisconsin Milwaukee:
Obviously, I'm biased here. Why? Because I have been wearing orange all season long, before I jumped on the Illini bandwagon. True: the hue is not for everyone but it's eye-catching and distinctive. Black, despite its mystery and bad-boy-ness, is pretty bland for a uniform, and the yellow highlights and cramped lettering do not work for Wisconsin Milwaukee. Winner: Illini.
Arizona vs. Oklahoma State:
Oklahoma State almost gets it, with the orange and blue, but the italic weird font does nothing for me. Arizona's uniform is slightly blah, but it has a classic look that appeals to me. It has a certain 'throwback' style that I like. Winner: Arizona.
Washington vs. Louisville:
I'm not really a fan of either of these uniforms. I don't like the red below the collar on the Louisville jersey, plus, will somebody please explain to me why college players are afraid to wear a uniform without a shirt underneath? Are they shy? However, while Washington's uniform is a little classier, they lose points on the blah colors and the stupid team number font. Winner: Louisville, but not by much.
Texas Tech vs. West Virginia
I like the yellow and gold on West Virginia's uniform, but think the designers flopped when putting the number in between the words "West" and "Virginia." The blocky, crowded font on the Texas Tech uniform is a risk but I like it, especially with the stripe on the sides. Plus, the players bring accessories that are always in style: beautiful biceps and bitchin' bald heads. Winner: Texas Tech.
North Carolina vs. Villanova
What's classic in basketball is not always classic in style. I know North Carolina has cachet but I really don't like light blue as a team color. The navy is striking and timeless. Winner: Villanova, but it's a tight one.
Wisconsin vs. NC State
They might look similar but there is still a difference. NC State is a little fussier, plus I'm disappointed that the team was so literal with their school name on their jersey. Plus, I don't like the initials, again, under the collar. The red shoes are a bit much but Wisconsin is a winner for subtlety and tastefulness. Winner: Wisconsin.
Duke vs. Michigan State
This is a tough one but my gut is telling me Duke. The classic color and lettering. But I love the Michigan State green and the bold choice just to go with "State" on the uniform. But I like the Duke font more. Winner: Duke, but it will be a good game.
Utah vs. Kentucky
Both teams come close but utimately are pretty blah. Utah's has nothing wrong with it, but takes no chances. Kentucky comes close to the Duke classic look but something doesn't look right. Is it the purplish blue? The single stripes? I don't know. Both are something of disappointments so I'll just go with the guy who looks cuter. Winner: Kentucky, in a snoozer.
