Blogging versus Blobbing

photo-1.jpgI meant to title the document I'm typing this in "Blogging" but I accidentally typed "Blobbing." That works out fine, though, because this piece is actually about "Blogging" versus "Blobbing" and I just didn't realize it until I typed that word.

"Blogging" is when you've got it. "Blobbing" is when you don't.

"Blogging" is when you have something timely, clever, personal or just generally interesting to share on your site, well-written and maybe well-illustrated, of just the right length. It makes people say "right on" or "this" or "OMG love" and "thank you for sharing."

"Blobbing" is when you just need to put some content up on your site because if you take a day off you are in danger of taking two days off and then five and then three months and then eventually letting your domain expire.

"Blogging" is typing standing up at your laptop because you're so full of your idea you don't even have time to sit down.

"Blobbing" is literally looking around your house to see if there is something interesting or funny or just anything there. Husband has two water bottles, two packs of gum and two single but different types of earplugs on his bedstand. Is that something? Eh, what the hell.

"Blogging" is having four or five ideas all cooking in a row and the only challenge is knowing which days to organize them, even contemplating spacing them out because they're all so awesome they should each get their time in the sun.

"Blobbing" is writing at your desk at 9:30 AM on a Monday, mad at yourself for not writing Sunday evening or afternoon or hell why not Friday afternoon and saving it and not worrying about it anymore? Why do you do this to yourself?

"Blogging" is feeling like you're really doing it right, being aware that everything is clicking and the world is just a place full of ideas for the plucking and thoughts to spin in your own distinctive voice.

"Blobbing" is wanting to quit because my god this is so tedious and depressing and what's the point especially because so many other people out there get more hits and comments even though secretly it doesn't seem like some of them are doing anything all that special but apparently they know what people want and you don't so maybe you should just stop kidding yourself and forcing people to read what you wrote just to be nice (because that's the only reason they're reading anyway.)

"Blogging" is secretly worrying when you'll get into the blob zone.

"Blobbing" is wondering if you'll ever get back to the blogging place but just hoping and assuming that, like always, you probably will.

"Blogging" is living and "Blobbing" is just not-dying. Living is a lot more fun than not-dying but both are better than the alternative (I guess.)
