Book By Its Cover Review: Getting Turned Away from a Club for Being Too Short

I was having drinks with a friend from New York earlier this week, and we were talking about nightclubs, which I am not known to frequent. She informed me that not long ago, a group of her friends was prohibited from entering a club for collectively being too short.

I've never heard of this. I've heard of not being cute enough, of not being well dressed enough, of having too many guys. But being too short?

In some ways I couldn't get too mad about this. After all, at least you can't help being short. In many ways you can't help being unattractive, too, but I'd rather be short than unattractive. Well, I am short anyway.

There are plenty of dumber reasons to be turned away from a club than your height, too. Your hair color, for one. Having the wrong astrological sign. Having written a book that only received mediocre reviews. Being "underage."

Like I said, I don't go to nightclubs. Trendy bars is pretty much where I draw the line, because I don't wait in line to go into places that I haven't already paid to get into, which will then require more money. I did wait in line for a few clubs in college, and you just get this unbelievable feeling of...stupidity. You have to convince yourself that it's perfectly fine...no, totally cool to stand out there and hope you can come in from the cold soon so you can please buy some overpriced drinks.

I'd take some pride in being too short to get into a club, I think, because it's a good story and because I avoided hanging out with a group of towering amazons who would probably spill drinks on me. And besides, being short is better than wearing the wrong shoes.
