Today is the day to pretend you're Jewish.

ORDER MY BOOK!

If you're in Chicago, please stop by tomorrow night, for an evening of readings and wonderful short films.

Got a question for Dear Zulk? Of course you do.

I do not have an interview to run today, and I apologize to everyone who is put out by this, especially my Dad. So, I will help you out in some way. I made dinner last night and it was really tasty so I wanted to share this family recipe with everyone.

Aunt Barbara's Beef Burgundy "Pie"

(Serves 4 not so hungry people, 2 really hungry people)

1 1/2 lb. beef stew meat, cut in 1" cubes
2 T. cooking oil
1 1/2 c. water
1 beef bouillon cube
1 c. sliced carrots
3/4 c. chopped onion
2 cloves minced garlic
1/2 c. burgundy (or any other dry red wine)
1/4 c. flour
1 t. Worcestershire
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. mixed salad herbs
1/2 t. Kitchen Bouquet
1/8 t. pepper
2 c. Bisquick (the reduced-fat kind works well here too)
2/3 c. water

In a 3 quart saucepan, brown meat in hot oil. Be careful, if you are letting your boyfriend do this part of the recipe, to show him how the smoke alarm works so when he burns the oil, he knows how to turn it off. Add the 1 1/2 cups water and boullon. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover and simmer 30 minutes. Watch "Friends." Add the carrots, onions and garlic and simmer another 20 minutes or until meat is tender or "The Apprentice" comes on. Thoroughly combine burgunday and flour and stir mixture gradually into beef. Add Worcestershire, salt, salad herbs, Kitchen Bouquet and pepper to beef mixture. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly, or have your kitchen helper do this absentmindedly while marveling at the neat effects of the show "Wonderfalls." Turn meat into 8 oz. individual casseroles if you are my mother, or pour into a casserole dish (1-2 quart-size will do) if you're anybody else.

Combine the Bisquick and water, making sure not to use a whisk with too-small tines or it will be a huge mess, and spoon on top of hot meat mixture. Secretly taste the Bisquick mix while no one is looking. Laugh at the phrase "Hot meat mixture." Bake at 375 degrees 15-20 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown. Do not eat in front of "Extreme Makeover."
