The J.R. Mahon Interview

Rabbit rabbit.

Zulkey.com will be out of town tomorrow, returning Monday, so I present to you a special early interview.

Today I speak with one of the pastors from XXXchurch.com. What is that, you ask? "XXXchurch exists to bring awareness, openness, accountability and recovery to the church, society and individuals in the issues of pornography and to begin to provide solutions through non-judgmental and creative means. XXXchurch is here to make you think, react and to decide where you stand on the issues of porn. We're not here to sling mud, but to shove the envelope and try and do some good." Yes indeedy. You can read more about it here. I wanted to learn more about the organization, as my curiosity was piqued as an interviewer and a lefty sort of Catholic. I think it was divine intervention that I accidentally received my gay neighbor's Playgirl in the mail yesterday, don't you?

The J.R. Mahon Interview: Under Twenty Questions

So, who are you hoping comes to your site and why?
XXXchurch exists to bring awareness, openness, accountability and recovery to the church, society and individuals in the issues of pornography and to begin to provide solutions through non-judgmental and creative means. XXXchurch is here to make you think, react and decide where you stand on the issues of porn. We're not here to sling mud, but to shove the envelope and try and do some good.

Do you have a lot of women who utilize xxxchurch?
Yes. Since 2000 the amount of women who admit to a porn problem has doubled. Women love the site.

Do you get many Christians contacting you who don't even like the words "Christian" and "porn" being used in the same sentence?
Oh yeah, Here's a taste:
E-MAIL -Your cause and website will no longer exist after one year. ?After which your lives will be filled with turmoil and grief. ?I pray for you that my premonition does not come to pass, but I am afraid you have already set things in motion and made your choices. Read closely. You are only out to make money. All I can do is pray for you. God Bless you! May our Lord forgive you of your sins. I pray you have accepted Jesus with all your heart. ?

Do you ever hear from people in the porn industry asking you to quit driving away their customers?
No. The porn industry has for the most part embraced us.

Do you have many non-Christians who use the site?
Our favorite people on the planet are non-Christians. They love the site.

I did not see your appearance on "The Daily Show": how did you feel about the interview after it aired?
Love The Daily Show.

I think it's interesting that Pat Robertson pulled support for one of your PSA's claiming that Jesus would never go into a porn shop, whereas many people would claim the opposite. Why and when do you think American Christians began believing that Christ would refrain from interacting with the very people that others would feel need His help the most?
Christ said, "I came for the sick" It's that's easy. We don't care about people's opinions. We care about truth. Jesus, everyday reaches into the gutter and pulls people out. That's the truth.

Your message makes sense in that to get young people to listen to you, you need to speak their language. But so many Christians seem to have a problem with it-do they see the conflict in the difficulty in making people see their point of view while maintaining their distance from the 'dirtiness' of everyday life?
Ya lost me.... We do what we do to drive the message of Christ into the world. XXXchurch.com is not out to please every Christian. Just the ones we like. We will do anything short of sin to push that message into the world.

As a Catholic, I'm just blown away by the level of hatred expressed for your cause in the hate mail section of your site. Do you think these correspondents see any irony in the fact that they're sentencing you to burn in hell while promoting Christ, or do they see no problem with mixing messages of contempt and condemnation along with spirituality?
The question should be, are those writing hate mail Christians?

Do the relatively recent allegations that Mary Magdalene was not in fact a prostitute change your statement/mission very much?
That's the most bizarre question. Our mission is to make people aware of all the issues about porn and for Christians to be accountable and clean up their lives.

So in the end, who is more fun to hang out with, your average porn star/director or your average evangelist?

Definitely porn stars.

Do you feel it's more important now for Christians to further justify their beliefs further beyond "it's in the Bible?"
No. The word of God is the Word of God. It is the truth. When I hear Christians say "it's in the Bible." I say, "Show me, chapter and verse." The realty is… and I will take heat for this. But, Christians are the last people who should tell you what's in the bible. The majority of Christians have never read the entire Bible. So… challenge people and read it yourself.

On that note, if somebody were to ask you why masturbation is a sin other than the fact that somebody wrote it down in the Bible a long time ago, what would you say?
It is and "it's in the bible."

What's xxxchurch's definition of porn?
The definition of porn will always be changing. When I was a kid it was my dads Playboy. Today, everything goes… from double penetration movies to child rape films. I answer the question this way. I know what porn is not.

What do Craig and Ron Jeremy debate? Are the discussions civil or acrimonious?

We debate the merits of porn. Ron is becoming a very close friend who we truly love. It's not unusual for us after a debate to sit up until 2-3 am talking about whatever. Imagine that. The porn pastors with the biggest porn star in the world hanging out in a hotel room…

Of the porn stars you've met, who's been the coolest person to chat with?
Ron.

How does it feel to be the 147th person interviewed for Zulkey.com?
All I have to say is "It's in the bible." Thanks for the time… If you get a chance check out www.starvingjesus.com
